Though many people call themselves financial planners, only those with the CFP® designation have gone through the rigorous certification requirements to be qualified as CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™. In fact, according to the CFP® Board, fewer than 20% of practicing financial advisors can claim the distinction of the CFP® mark.
CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERS™ are required to have at least three years of financial planning experience. They must also pass a thorough and extensive financial planning exam. Once certified, CFP® practitioners are required to remain current with developments in the financial industry by completing a minimum of thirty hours of continuing education courses every two years.
